"Self-management" | It's not time management!

“If you learn to self-control, you can master anything.” -Anonymous

Money can be managed. People can be managed. Schedules can be managed. If you’re wondering about how you can become better at time management, probably you’re asking the wrong questions. Time can only be accounted for.

People who think they have time management problems actually have priority management problems, which means, at root, they have self-management problems.

Self-management is about making a choice to do more than you need to, and it is a great skill to build for life and work.

The three key self-management skills include:

1. Initiative
2. Organization
3. Accountability

Initiative is being able to work without always being told what to do. You can show initiative by thinking of yourself and taking action when needed. It means using your thinking skills, and having the motivation to achieve. Initiative requires self-belief because you need resilience and motivation to go out of your way to solve problems and do things without being reminded or asked to.

If you are organized in life and work it, means you can plan your time and the things you have to do. You know what is most important, what should be done first and what will take the longest. It is also about being prepared and having the things you need when you need them. So if you know you need certain tools or information to complete a task, you make sure you have them before you begin.

Accountability and responsibility are similar but they don’t mean the same thing. If you say to yourself that you are accountable, it means that you take ownership of the responsibilities that come your way. You take pride in your work and want to do it well to get the best results possible. You can be justly proud of the task’s success, and you accept responsibility if it goes wrong.

There are lots of ways to improve your initiative and accountability at school, and to get organized at the same time.

 · You can show initiative by starting a project or activity on your own.
 · If you’re doing a group project, as well as building your teamwork skills you can learn from someone else and contribute your own ideas so you both grow.
 · Keeping your timetable secure so you can attend classes, pass projects, and school papers on time.
 · Making lists and study notes in advance can help you keep to a revision schedule and have enough time to revise subjects.
 · Act on your own without relying on to someone’s action of work.

Building self-management skills at school will help you:

 · Prepare for big events like exams (preparation usually means less stress)
 · Help you get a better balance of work, study, and relaxation   · Help you get more out of your school experience by volunteering ideas and time.

We, the students of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School, face different problems everyday. From simplest to worst problems such as choosing what to buy in our school canteens, time spent using gadgets, and budgeting our allowances for our daily necessities as students.

An organized person will know what they need to do. From managing your time to prioritizing tasks, and even having a tidy desk, being organized will help you improve your employability skills and also your life. A person who already planned of what they'll do at their budget will know what to do. From planning what you will choose between the items that is best for your necessities, and how will you manage your time using gadgets. Self-management is about making a choice to do more than you need to, and it is a great skill to build for life and work.

If you manage your priorities well, you’ll see how you really don’t have a time management problem. Prioritization is the key to getting things right!
